Fleeting Doubt - Commission Fleeting Doubt
I could feel the hooves of my competitors shift against the ground, the gates beside me clanging as the muscled rumps of the other horses shied nervously. My freshly groomed, dappled gray coat gleamed in the spots of sun that came through the metal.
“In gate four, it's Michael Hill atop Joey's Fleeting Doubt.” I heard my name boomed across the track in the announcer's odd warbled voice. Joey was the name of the man who owned my mother, and 'fleeting doubt' came from my scrawny not-race-material appearance. I was weak as a foal, and trained late, but when they finally did set me onto the training track, their doubts certainly were fleeting.
I stayed still, calm and waiting. I had a reputation in the barn for being cool-headed and a quick learner.
I also always wanted to win.
The gates clanged open and I took off without a second thought, a couple strides ahead of a massive black stallion.
His name was Coal Train. I had overheard my o
My last momentsThe shadows stretched over the warped prison cell bricks like claws grabbing for a hold. I looked up from my corner as a drop of water hit my nose from the window. It was raining outside. I love rain, and all water, even though the only thing I had was the meager supply the guards brought me. I could see a lake from my window though. Oh how I longed to swim in it!
The grating of my cell door distracted me from the wonder of trickling water. Two guards were standing in the doorway, newly polished armor shining in the low lantern light.
"Get up." One barked at me. I obeyed slowly, my knees creaking from having not stood for so long.
"Where are we going?" I asked hoarsely, though I knew in my heart.
"There's a hot party out in the church square." The other guard laughed cruelly, gruffly shoving me forward. You think after all this time they could be a little nicer to me.
But no, I was vermin to them…evil… a disease. Witchcraft was outlawed after all. I was pushed down the da
Winter and FrostWinter sat outside, staring in wonder at the dwindling snowflakes dancing from the sky around her. She loved winter. To her, it felt magical. Sure, summer was gorgeous and fall was wonderful with all the colors, but nothing could compare to the sparkling frozen beauty of winter. And here she sat, in the midst of that beauty.
She was in the middle of a field, way past dark. Heavy snow had fallen only a few hours before, now only a few snowflakes fell from the dark sky, and the smooth blanket of white was undisturbed by even the animals.
Winter didn't want to leave, but the numb cold state of her body forced her to stand up and trudge through the powdery snow back into the small town where she lived.
The collection of cottages and other small buildings looked like a shadowy mass in the low moonlight, individual houses only distinguishable by the few that had warm yellow lights glowing in their windows. The lights disappeared one by one as she got closer, the late hour driving people into
